More than two and a half million students in America will now know about Sikhism. In fact, two other US states have voted in favor of new social studies standards that will include Sikhism in their school curriculum. Utah and Mississippi have become the 15th and 16th US states to include information about Sikhism, Sikh customs and traditions in their social studies curriculum. About 6,06,000 students in Utah and about 4,57,000 students in Mississippi will get to know about the Sikh community.
Sikhism is the fifth largest religion in the world and the community has contributed to American society for more than 125 years in the fields of civil rights, politics, agriculture, engineering and medicine. Amrik Singh, a member of Jackson’s Sikh community, said these new standards provide an opportunity for our growing Sikh community in Mississippi to educate our neighbors about Sikhism and better protect and identify Sikh students in the state.
