From the new IT rules, there will be a break on the arbitrariness of social media companies, immediate action will be taken on wrong posts

Minister of State for Information Technology (IT) Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Saturday said that the amendments in IT rules will make social media companies responsible for being more careful, so that no illegal content or wrong information is posted on their platforms. The government on Friday announced the formation of appeal committees in three months, amending IT rules for proper redressal of complaints filed on content available on social media platforms and other issues.

Chandrasekhar said the government is not interested in playing the role of an ombudsman. This is a responsibility we are taking reluctantly, as the complaint system is not functioning properly. Earlier, IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had on Friday notified the formation of GCA Online ‘Empowerment of Users’ and said Grievance Appellate Committees (GACs) would be set up to hear appeals against the decisions of Grievance Officers appointed by arbitrators.
