After the resignation of British PM Liz Truss, there is a lot of discussion on who will take over the post of Prime Minister. Indian-origin Rishi Sunak, who lost to Truss in the race for the post of Prime Minister in September, has emerged as the strongest contender in the race to become the PM this time.
Sunk was in the lead with 155 MPs while Penny Mordert had the support of 25 MPs. There are 357 MPs and only 180 MPs have made their support public. There were more than 50 MPs who supported former PM Boris Johnson but have now dropped out of the race.
Nominations are coming in and will close on Monday at 2pm (local time). Nominations opened on Thursday night. Candidates must have the support of at least 100 Tory MPs out of a total of 357 MPs to progress to the next stage. If at least one candidate wins the support of at least 100 of his peers by the deadline, that person will become the next Tory leader and the country’s next prime minister.
