The Supreme Court will decide the marriage age of Muslim girls, the hearing will be held on November 9

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear an important legal question related to the marriage of minor Muslim girls. This time the issue is the age of marriage for Muslim girls. The Supreme Court has fixed 9 November 2022 for the hearing of this matter on 17 October 2022.

In June 2022, a case involving a 16-year-old minor Muslim girl and a 21-year-old Muslim boy reached the Punjab-Haryana High Court. In the petition, both had told that they got married recently. The families of both are against this marriage, so they should be given protection. After the hearing, the High Court said, “According to the law, Muslim girls are married under the ‘Muslim Personal Law’.”

In such a situation, a Muslim girl becomes eligible for marriage at the age of 15. Justice JS Bedi also said that the boy and girl had married against the wishes of their family members. Merely because of this they cannot be deprived of the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
