Modern Slaughter House : a step forward to make Ludhiana a “Smart City”

Ludhiana’s Modern slaughterhouse is ready to serve the Ludhianvis. The municipal corporation completed the project of modernizing the slaughterhouse at the liberal dairy complex, a project worth 19.5 crores that has been put on delay since 2008. The Modern Slaughterhouse of Ludhiana was expected to be inaugurated on 28 January 2020. But was again put on hold for another few months due to the onset of Covid 19.

But it appears that municipal corporation was eagerly waiting to start this facility as recently the municipal corporation (MC), Ludhiana, on 29 December 2020, signed an agreement with Noida based Micro transmission System Company to run the modern slaughterhouse here.  The agreement was signed between MC joint Commissioner Swati Tiwana and Company’s partner Manoj Jha.

This facility is capable of slaughtering 2000 poultry birds per hour in two shifts of eight hours each; and 1000 goats, sheep and pigs.

The modern word here suggests the maximum usage of machines reducing the manual power to prevent direct contact with the meat. Keeping in check with the hygiene, every department, be it be goat, sheep or pig slaughtering halls, they all have their doctor rooms especially made for the inspection of the animals. There are different sections of every department such as blood processing room, boiler room, animal keeping grounds, dressing room etc. They all have significant roles after and before the slaughtering process. Likewise, they have different gates through which the animals will be brought to the poultry receiving areas, also with different entries made to deliver the slaughtered meat to the meat shops.

Also, the local bodies department has approved the resolution of MC house to fix slaughtering rates as follows: rupees 150 for slaughtering a goat or a wheel, 10nrupees for poultry and 100 for pig.

The main motive of building this facility is to prevent illegal slaughtering of animals in different parts of the city including Shivpuri, khud mohalla, metro Road, Vijay Nagar, haibowal, dug among other areas. With the beginning of this impressive initiative will enable the MC to implement a complete ban on illegal slaughtering in the city.

Furthermore, the illegal slaughtering shops are unhygienic and revealed to the external environment which is not at all healthy. Whereas, the modern slaughterhouse has a separate effluent treatment plant; preservation and chilling facility; and a separate blood processing unit.  The effluent treatment plant performs removal of large solids and organic matter including the filtration of all kind of waste discharged after the slaughtering. This particular plant will filter all the waste and will be discharged into the piping underground which connects Budha Nala

This whole project worth 19.5 Crore has been funded by the union and state governments, with former providing 8 crores and latter 11.5 crores .

Joint commissioner Swati Tiwana said the entrusted company, which will start slaughterhouse operations in this January, would ensure to provide fresh and hygienic meat to residents, she explained that under the project, the manual slaughter would be replaced by automation and the company would deliver meat to over 500 meat shops. Air-conditioned fitted reefer vans would be used to deliver the meat to shops. Adding to it, she said different modern slaughter halls had been established and separate skilled workers were hired to perform “halal’ slaughtering.

This modern slaughter is considered to be the biggest slaughterhouse of Punjab and believably a step towards making Ludhiana a “Smart City”.
